I read something about Apple stopped signing 3.1.2 firmware? I'll soon have an iPhone 3GS on 3.1.2 firmware that I'm going to want to restore and start clean with. Will it be possible to do that or will it try and make me upgrade to 3.1.3 because Apple stopped signing the firmware?

    Thanks

I believe you will have to upgrade, but several questions:
Are you buying a used device, or one from Apple
If yes, was it jailbroken before?
    Are you intending to jailbreak?
It is possible, if you jailbreak the device before you restore, backup your sigs, then restore

If my 3.1.2 phone requires restored, are you saying that it would only allow back up to 3.1.3. Where can i find my SHSH files as i now have a new pc since JBing my phone.

it works... as long as the phones on 3.1.2, jailbreak with blackrain first, then go to Cydia and hit "make my life easier" button which will back up the ECID.SHSH file for 3.1.2, then you're good to go. Go here for the complete instructions. I have followed this and have successfully clean restored/jailbroken my 3GS

When I go to cydia, it says "This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.3"

    what does this mean?

Don't hijack threads. But read the stickies and search. It clearly saws it in threads.
