I know nearly nothing about graphics cards, but couldn't we technically write a software driver to support the newer standard? From what I read, openGL ES 2 is only a standard / instruction set that gpu's are supposed to meet and perform at. I know that openGL can be emulated on older computers / newer drivers can be run with limited software support.
This isn't much of a question, but we could really go far with this idea and write software drivers to run something really intensive to run on the new hardware (think iPT 4g and iPhone 4)..

I was thinking about doing this to my iPhone 3G, but then after reading posts some users said that this is nOt recommended for devices with 128 MB RAM. I would think that these devices would benefit more than those that have 256 MB RAM.

I'll vouch for that. I tried it on my 2nd gen for a few days and it was horribly slow when I needed more RAM. The virtual memory is just not fast enough.
