Have you tried using a different USB port and then restoring the iPod?

You need a RESTORE, NOT AN UPDATE

    iPhone 4 (Black)
    Turn off iPod
    Wait 5 sec.
Hold down Sleep + Home button
Keep that held down for 10 sec.
let go of the home button while still keeping down the sleep button
keep the sleep button down until iTunes prompts you that you are in restore mode

    (you are now in DFU)

restore your iPod to factory defaults by pressing the "Restore" button in iTunes

after you start the restore if your ipod's screen flashes white for a breif second then you succesfully entered DFU

if you get an error while restoring unplug your iPod and plug it back in (do not re-enter DFU, just plug it back in) it will come up saying your still in recovery mode then press the "Restore" button again
(i found this to help with certain errors during a restore)
