Please help. iPod touch 2G unable to restore

My ipod touch 2G crashed while installing Cro-Mag Rally, restarted it but it keeps showing the iTunes logo, I think thats restore mode right? I tried to restore the firmware but keeps getting the message "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)."after the "Preparing iPod for restore" progress bar.

    Please help... thanks.

    Re-download the firmware file, I don't have a 2G iPod touch, so...

Already done that, normal restore and update or "shift restore" and choosing the file gives the same error message

Try putting it into DFU mode (just like you would any of the other devices) and restore.

That's not how to get into DFU. Here's how to actually get into DFU, haha:

    1. Turn off the device and wait 5 seconds.
    2. Hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds.
    3. Release the power button at the end of the 10 seconds, but keep holding home.
    4. Wait 10 seconds or so while holding home, and iTunes will say your iPod is in recovery.

There will be no recovery screen--it's just black. Also, timing is important, so watch a clock or something. Good luck.

One question first: are you using Vista?
I know the problem from an 1G and my Vista-PC, maybe you are able to try this:

Another PC, running Windows XP, could restore the iPod-Firmware without problems!
-> If you are able to take another PC try! It worked fine here!

(The 1G crashed on my Vista-PC after Updating to 2.0.1, other Updates from 1.x to 1.y or 1.x to 2.0 din't cause problems!)

Before I used my 2G with this PC I reinstalled iTunes and I could Update 2.1 to 2.1.1 without problems on this Vista-PC. Maybe reinstalling is enough...

ok i managed to get it to DFU mode, the iPod touch is a black screen and I shift restore and choose the 2.1.1 ipsw firmware. I get a white screen on the ipod when iTunes is preparing the ipod for restore and then the apple logo appears and after a while there is a waiting cursors spinning.

But the same error still occurs "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)."

Its the same for new install of iTunes on both Vista and XP machine.

    I'm really at wits ends....

Is there a firmware file for 2.1 for 2G ipod touch, i only found one for 1G
