    Hi Everyone,
I am new here (duh) and I know I've seen a few threads on error 1604, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere, so I thought I might help to explain my situation...

OK, so I did big no no and tried to get Firmware 3.0 for free...which of course lock up my iPod Touch 2G with the itunes error 0xe800005d and iTunes would not recognize the device.

So I went in to DFU mode and proceeded to have iTunes restore my ipod. It downloaded the update for 2.2.1, extracted the software and then "prepares the ipod for the restore" It does this for about 5-10 minutes and then kicks back a 1604 error...

I will include the error log at the end since it might be of help to someone that knows what they are looking at.

I also tried to restore by downloading the firmware separately and doing the Shift-click restore option and manually choosing the file. This gave me the same result.

Does anyone have any idea how I can "unbrick" my iPod Touch?

PLEASE HELP - THIS IS KILLING ME!!!

I sincerely appreciate any help you can offer.

Thank you so much in advance..

PS - Yes, I did learn my lesson!

Here is the iPodUpdater Log if it is of any help...

    try this method.

    Fix error 1604

make sure all instances of itunes related is closed.
    Connect ipod touch to computer.
Put to DFU Mode and open up itunes ( it should say ipod is in recovery )
do a shift+restore to firmware of choice, (i did this from 2.1.1 to 2.2.1)
wait until ipod touch turns to white or black doesn't matter ( Preparing to Restore )
then CTRL+Alt+Delete (open up task manager)
Close off Itunes.exe and IpodService.exe (itunes should close while ipod is still in recovery)
Quickly Switch USB Port of Ipod Touch to other port.
Open up itunes ( it should say ipod is in recovery )
then now do a Shift+Restore again and it should work.

How long should it take for the iPod Touch screen to go black or white? Through the whole process, my screen stays on with the USB graphic and iTunes logo. and after some time, it again gives me the error 1604.

I tried it once doing the ctrl-Alt-Del when while iTunes was stuck on "preparing iPod to restore" and when I switched USB ports and reopend iTunes and tried the recovery again, I got the same old error...

Am I missing a step some where?

Thanks for the guidance to far, BTW...

Just to add. MY ipod touch ran into 1604 errors after I tried upgrading the firmware from 2.2.1 to 3.0. It wasn't successful and now it encountered errors restoring.. Can't even restore back to original firmware. Can anyone help?

no. if you get it into DFU mode properly.. the screen will be BLACK but you can tell its on.

Press home + power till the screen goes black... then let go of JUST power. continue to hold home for 7-8 seconds. it should be a black screen.

Yes, I did get into DFU mode. The pop-up meessage in Windows also informed me that. However, I'm still unable to restore.

    NEVER EVER DO THAT.

Never close itunes ect.. and that method, theres a high chance you could BRICK your iPod's. the best Way i know is to Download WinPWN and prepare it that way. simples!
