Ok this is exactly what you do.

Hold both the home and power buttons NOT JUST UNTIL IT TURNS OFF, hold it until you see the apple logo and the iPod turn BACK ON. Then stop holding the power button until you see the connect to iTunes screen (restore mode).

You can then restore using iTunes back to 1.1.3. I was unable to go directly back to 1.1.1 from recovery mode. However I was able to using DFU mode after restoring to 1.1.3

    ....

ok....here is what i have done....

it is on the stupid screen with the"BSD root: md0, major 2, minor 0...continuously repeating.

I hold both physical buttons untill the ipod turns off and the apple logo shows....

I then let go of the power button when the apple logo appeared...

The home button is still being held,,, however i have once again returned to the BSD root

Well this is a long shot but try holding the power button for 1 second or so after the apple logo appears.

I had the same problem and come to think of it i was connected to my pc when i was able to get into the restore mode. Make sure you let go of the power button the second you see the apple logo.
