The new PlayStation Plus service gives you an "enhanced" experience, on top of all the free stuff that you currently get on the free PlayStation Network. You get Early demos, beta invites, discounts on PSN stuff and patches. One year will cost you $50.

You also get some additional content that you own ONLY when you have a subscription, meaning it will go away when you cancel the service, locking you into the service forever.

Certain titles like wipEout HD and others will be “temporarily” owned by you

Those who don't want to pay for a year, can get 3 months for $17. But the free version still lets you play online (for the most part), until Sony starts changing things around. It sounds a lot like the Xbox Live Gold vs. Silver distinction.

I'm staying free. That's what made the PS3 so good. Free online!

Patches? WTF does that mean? We have to pay for patches now?

I'm going to hold judgment until I read a few reviews of the service, but if I have to give them money for patches, bug fixes for games, I'm going to be really mad.

Yeah I was pretty confused about that too.

I doubt they'll start charging for patches, but maybe they'll have the patches auto-download with Plus whereas you won't notice until you launch the game without. Just my guess.

I think they may have meant you get the patches sooner, if they are mean it as it was written then I am going to sell mine.

This is still unacceptable to me. I hope Vince is right.

$50 for that?! It sounds pretty crummy!

^Congrats! You now know why people think Xbox Live is a ripoff!

I hope I'm right too jimbeam, I don't think they generally withhold patches for any reason, so proposing that you'll get them sooner seems kinda wrong to me. It's certainly feasible though.
