After trying CS3 I went back to CS2. For some reason CS2 is easier to use imo.
You should download the trial for CS2.

Well, you can google for some tutorials, brushes, effects and etc... I have some experience on PS but I don't have the time enough to explain the basics, so just google ^^ and Jake is right, CS2 runs way smoother than CS3.

Edit: CS3 is not more complex it's just performance... On my PC CS2 runs better

    Cheers,
    Joseph

I've been using Photoshop for years and have tons of experience. CS was a great new program, CS2 was the exact same as CS, but used more RAM. CS3 is much much easier to use and is much faster than all the other versions (I'll pull out some charts from the net if you don't believe me). CS3 is much more user friendly than any other Photoshop out there.

For tutorials, try Pixel2life.com they have great beginners tutorials there. If you can't do those, try playing around and doing some useless doodles and try experimenting. That's the best way to learn, after that, you can move on to tutorials if you like.

Photoshop is harder than it looks, so don't get your hopes up too too fast.
