I heard from a friend that you had to pay to get OS 4.0 as it was a major upgrade. Is this true?

iPod touch users will have to pay, it will be free for iPhone users though. Its been the same for 2.0 and 3.0

Just like all major OS updates, you will have to pay.

Just say 4.1 was released (which I know will be a long time) would that be free?

Only if you're already on 4.0. If not, then you'd still have to pay.

You will have to pay for 4.0, like 3.0 and 2.0.

Apple charges iPod touch users a fee (in the past, it was $9.99) to upgrade. Some users would say this is unfair, though it really isn't. iPhone users get it for free because they are on a monthly subscription service with AT&T, and Apple gets some of that money. In the long run, you are paying less than an iPhone user is.

So yeah. You'll be paying, like the rest of us. Oh, and even if you wait until 4.1, you will still have to pay.

$10 for legit multitasking seems like a bargain to me...
