I have an app idea that would be location specific but geared towards a certain demographic. I would gather the info for my hometown, but here's the problem: if other people like it, what would prevent them for hijacking it for their town? How could I patent it and get a cut?

Should I go with a dev company that could then develop the app for other cities, and take what I can get, if anything? Or just put my idea out there. People will copy it anyways, right?

I doubt you can patent technology using Apple's location API's. Also if they changed it for their hometown and changed it a bit the patent wouldn't cover it anyway so it would be very much useless.

You app will likely fail and a patent isn't really what you would want here. How about a copyright. Unless you have something incredibly original which is not likely you will spend tens of thousands of dollars for nothing.
