So I'm kinda a n00b at paint.NET. But when I try to take a Lockscreen template and put a picture on it, then the template and the picture go to the top left corner, and then there is this checkerboard thing that's now part of the photo. So I think I might be pressing the wrong buttons, I go to layers. and import from file. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a way to fix this problem?

Checkers mean that it is a transparent area. I suggest you switch to GIMP or Photoshop because that's what most people use around here. It would be a lot easier to help you if you used a better program that more people knew about.
