SORRY BUT I'M SO PEED OFF WITH THE SAME PEOPLE ASKING OVER AND OVER AGAIN, IF LINUX IS UBUNTU!
IT'S NOT, LINUX IS THE KERNEL!
4 GOD SAKE UBUNTU IS A DISTRIBUTION, NOT LINUX.
UBUNTU IS BASICALLY A FACE/GUI FOR LINUX.
OPENIBOOT INSTALLS THE NON-GUI VERSION OF UBUNTU BASICALLY.

I WANT HELP WITH INSTALLING OPENIBOOT, BUT I KEEP GETTING POINTED TOWARDS POST ASKING IF LINUX IS UBUNTU

Personally, im sorry that i cannot truefully answer your whole question, as i havenot been able to experience the linux on the ipod touch, and i have even started a forum asking HOW to get ubuntu or linux on it, which no one here seems to know how to get a GUI of ubuntu, Xubuntu, or Kubuntu on the itouch when 2/3 of them would run. however thats a little offtopic. How did you get your 3.0 to get linux to work, because i can not get it to work for some reason and end up having to restore my ipod touch due to in-ability to do anything after it fails to run linux. can you help me since you actually got it running on your ipod after the 3.0 update?

Dude, do you have any idea how hard a working, GUI version of linux will be to make? You do not have too much experience with Linux, obviously, or at least other distros of it, and having to make the hardware supported.

Beginning is good, bad bottom is all wrong

It's distro, not GUI. Ubuntu uses Gnome as GUI, you can run it on any other desktop distro

It's not even Linux, its a booter. It's something like GRUB or LILO or BootCamp in mac

Does anybody know what openiboot does. It installs the kernel on the iphone as a proof of concept, completely pointless atm unless you feel like showing off to ur geeky mates.
(which is why i will be doing it soon)

Do you have a 1st gen ipod touch or iPhone?

Then you can run it only if your on 1.x.x firmware.

And you need a Linux distro to send the commands over usb.
