So: now that i've found the thing completely drained, it's time to learn about what appear to be several statuses of off-ness:

When i press the sleep/wake button briefly, the unit appears to go off. However, when i hold down the s/w button, i get the red slider. What's the difference?

I can also push down the s/w button when i am listening to something, which continues to play although the display goes off. What is the status then?

I have set it to lock after 3 minutes, but is that the same as going off?

And if it's called a sleep/wake button, when does it wake?

    Thanks!

Everything but the red slider is sleep. If you want a real power off do the red slider

Sleep basically makes the iPod sleep

It uses as little battery as possible and using the red slider to fully power off your iPod takes more power to actually turn it on. I never turn my iPod off, only about once a month and my battery takes a while to drain.

Using the red slider also resets your ipod which will free up ram from any recently opened applications. It is suggested after installing an application to reduce any chance of freezing or instability you may encounter.

If you press the Power button once, then it will sleep.
If you hold it and slide the red slider, it will shut it down.

Sleep mode makes the ipod go into its most lowest energy levels while the sleep just turns it off.
