I'm pretty sure thats normal for regular ipod headphones after a while of use. I got a $100 set of earphones with my new laptop and they work great. I'm convinced its the headphones.

Ok, everyone knows apple's stock headphones suck balls. I am on my 3rd pair right now (why? because they replace them for free) so go to the apple store, demand for new headphones and go home happy

Then the headphones you're using probably died, it happens.
