Maybe it's me being tired or what not but is there a thread on what the common things to start to tweak and play with on a new iTouch?

I just bought a 32gb 3g iTouch that will be used for music, maybe games, movies and so forth.

Play with as is then tweak or start tweaking from the start? "Must have" apps for a noob?

Thanks for your patience and help!

Hey, congrats on your new purchase!

Your iPod touch can be jailbroken. Jailbreaking means that it "unlocks" the iPod touch to new features that Apple doesn't want you to have. You can have themes, that change the overall appearance of the iPod, tweaks and other fun things that you should discover.

NOTE: Jailbreaking is NOT illegal, but it does, however, void your warranty with Apple. If the iPod touch breaks, you will nt be able to send it in for repairs. HOWEVER, if you do a DFU restore, which is very easy to do (search the forums for how to do a DFU restore if you need) your iPod touch will erase the jailbreak and Apple will not be able to detect your jailbreak and you will be able to send it in for repairs, should it be necessary.

Now, to jailbreak, go here: http://spiritjb.com/
download the windows or mac version, which ever you are running, and follow the instructions. Soon you will be jailbroken! Now, once you are jailbroken, an app called "Cydia" will be on your iPod. This "Cydia" is basically like a souped up app store. You can download themes, and other tweaks for your iPod here. Have fun and remember to ask questions!

There are many interesting tweaks that you can install once you are jailbroken. One of the more interesting tweaks is theming your iPhone via the app WinterBoard that you can install from Cydia. Just find a theme you like in cydia, install it, use WinterBoard to select it, and you're done.

Also, if you want some actual multitasking, download something like ProSwitcher or Circuitous. They allow you to background your apps and switch between apps running in the background. It's extremely useful for apps like Pandora, which will continue playing even after you have closed it if you enable backgrounding.

I'd recommend a couple of applications as must have

Air Video - allows you to stream video from your pc/mac/whatever to your ipod. don't have to waste space with video on the ipod anymore (or the time converting it) you will need a somewhat modern pc to do the real time conversions, but it's awesome

    stanza - fantastic eBook reader

categories (if you have a lot of apps, its puts them into folders)
5 icon dock( allows you to put 5 icons into your dock at the bottom)
Iacces( allows you to change the color of your keyboard) a little tricky to setup though..

Yup, once you get into it, it's quite addictive to mod your iPod.

If you're getting into jailbreaking, make sure you download Cydelete. It makes deleting apps from Cydia 10x easier.
