Back when I used to have a pocket pc there was this think called AvantGo. Not sure if anyone here has heard of it but the main idea was that it synced to your computer and it would download weather, news and other updates to your PDA so you could read it while you were out of a wifi zone.

I'm curious if there's something similar that can easily fetch news stories and temporarily store them on the ipod.

Yeah that would be good. I used Avantgo for years on my old iPaq HP2210. Now i'm a Mac man and don't miss the pc and all it's quirks. Though I still have one on my plasma in the lounge as a Media PC. Don't know if Digg will do it. Think you still have to be online. WiFi hotspots here in Western Australia are few and far between, though the CBD is now fully WiFi but I never go in there as it is the crappiest city.
