There's an app called "OffMaps" which you can buy for 2,39€ from the AppStore. It downloads the maps you want from OpenStreetMap. For most big cities the maps are more detailed than from google. It is quite a good app and very easy to use. But with data > 1 GB your ipod/iphone becomes quite slow.

A second app called "Offline Maps" is only available via Cydia if you have a jailbroken device. Before using it you have to download GMDL and create your custom maps which you'll have to upload to the ipod/iphone. Offline Maps modifies the cache of the Google Maps App that comes with the ipod/iphone for free.

    http://code.google.com/p/gmdl/

Just start the app Offline Maps and click on help inside the app. There you can find a tutorial how to upload the database to the ipod.

Wikimap - Save OSM Maps for Offline Navigation

Another option is to use Wikimap. It allows you to save open street maps for offline navigation. It also allows creating new waypoints and saving of images related to the waypoints which are automatically shared to other wikimap users. Visit

    http://wiki.alumni.net/wiki/Wikimap

    for more information. Thanks.
