Is there an offline maps app that is recommended to use on this site? I looked through the list of apps but could not find one, unless I missed it. If someone could post a link that would be appreciated. Thanks

    Very helpful, well done.

In answer an offline map program would indeed be too large but.......

the amazing thing about googlemaps on your jailbroken ipod touch is that it caches whatever you look at online and allows you to then use it offline.

I was in Wellington all last week and spent 20 mins scrolling around and adding bookmarks. Once I got there, wiFi or no I was still able to find my way around no problem.

I think this is not a very well known aspect of the maps.app

If you are prepared to spend a little time in advance preparing it you will have all the info you need next trip.

Now does anyone know how to clear the cache?

I've noticed the same thing too. Possibly the cache is cleared when you turn the ipot off (not stand by)? Anyway, scrolling around and pinpointing some locations helps quite well

    Google maps

You can use google maps also offline. the only thing is you have to charge the map you want before and online. This will save all the maps in the memory.

An offline map wouldn't be too large. I have a Garmin Quest which can only store 256mb... but that's about half the US. So < 1gb should be plenty.

So an offline map app would work and be an excellent idea. Maybe when the sdk is released someone will create one.

Of course if a future touch would have a SiRF chip and an app like the garmin's nuvi's... that'd be powerful. Apple should collaborate w/ garmin or buy them.

i think the maps wouldn't be too large when you're doing only the maps not with the satelite.

Yes. But it depends on the zoom levels and how big of an area you want!

I think a better option would be a "perimeter" option that lets you download a map of your city, for example. My city is very small. 2 miles x 2 miles.

I've already pretty much cached the whole thing, just not all the way zoomed in.

Also, an option to get directions OFFLINE would be VERY helpful.

We are talking about terrain not satellite.

Terrain uses almost nothing, it's like 2 colors or maybe 3.

Satellite is a much more complex picture.

It's how these devices all use terrain and not satellite.
