Is there or will there ever be an app just like google maps EXCEPT we don't need to be connected to the internet?

I find it unescessary to have to always be connected to wifi in order to just use the maps app; isn't it possible to save the whole world's addresses?

I have an ipod touch 2g and im aware there isnt a jailbreak for it yet; but is it remotely possible to hav what im suggesting in the future? or is there one already (for the 1g that is)?

Just woah.... I wouldn't even imagine the entire google maps database on an iPod touch... Of course you need an Internet connection, just like on a computer

    The whole world?
    There's no way.
    Maybe the local area. Maybe.

then.. what about just being able to save your country's, or even just areas around you? Surely that wouldnt be diffiicult and it definitely is a hassle for us ipod touch users to have to find wifi in order to look at maps. If i'm lost in a subway/bus stop an offline map would be helpful.

There is one trick, when you route directions from a place to place, after it loads you can view the steps to destination it over and over again without Wi-Fi.

I don't see why you couldn't just save a certain area or region of your choosing for further referance without Wifi. Yet another iPod touch downside...

Yes, but still. Having an area is still a considerable amount of storage...
There's this app called Offline Maps and it saved like the area you was looking at.

Then get an iPhone. Just think of the amount of data it would be in order to do something like that.

a german city takes ~140mb in mapview and ~600mb in hybrid (satellite + streets) view.
I've got the whole map of my city on my 1G. It has advantages and disadvantages.
The best is that even wifibased positioning will work offline!

All you have to know how to do that is described on the official page of the OfflineMap app.
