For those who don't care about america and their AT&T i've found some useful information regarding the pay as you go 3G iPhone:

    From O2:

The 8Gb iPhone is provided at no additional cost on selected consumer tarrifs only when you connect to a new minimum term contract. Connection subject to status, minimum term contract, credit check & debit debit. Terms apply.

I'm not sure what this means in english however so could someone tell me? I presume that it means that you can only be on a certain tarrif.

This is what it means. Look at the chart on this website: http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paymonthly

It means that when you pay £45/month, you get the 8GB iPhone for free or the 16GB iPhone for £59.
It means that when you pay £75/month, you get the 8GB iPhone for free or the 16GB iPhone for free.

Both plans are based on a 18-month contract.
