I believe iremote is available in the app store.

There are several remote programs but they come with a few strings.
You need a way to communicate with the tv. If its an apple tv or wifi tv then you can use wifi to communicate with the tv.
If its just a regular tv then you need a special accessory that sends the tv infrared signal.

There are many remote apps like I said.

However, You will not find a magic app that lets your ipod control your tv unless you purchase the infrared accessory that sends the instructions to the tv.

And unless the lights in your friends house are connected to a wifi or a home network console. I dont see how you could turn the light of with any of these apps.

Most lights are not connected to a home console and I dont know of any that accept wifi or an infrared signal. If your saw your friend turn off a regular lamp with just his ipod, thats impressive.

Really, He just used a magic ipod app to turn off a regular lamp.

There wasn't any complex wiring and routers.

I'm not trying to question what you saw, but the science just doesn't add up.
