I don't know anyhting about that application, but I know that for the 1.x firmware, there was an application that used the light sensor of the device to calculate north. It used location services to figure about where you were geographically, and required you to hold your finger on teh center of the screen. You'd turn the device until your finger shadow covered the light sensor. Then, it would use that, the time, and where you were to calculate north.

I don't know how accurate it was though.

Yeah, that sounds interesting. It also sounds like it would be pretty inaccurate.

Yeah. The app is called "Compass Free". Except there is no WiFi locational feature. It just put-your-finger-on-the-center-of-the-screen type of app.

it didnt actually use the light sensor. that app used your system time to figure out where the sun would be in the sky. when you held your finger over the screen you would align your fingers shadow with the shadow on screen, and then the marker would display north for you. its actually a rather accurate way of measuring north, but the app did have some flaws. its available in the app store now as the app "Compass Free" LINK
