My daughter has an 8G iPod Touch 1G which we have never jailbroken or modified in any way other than replacing the battery 6 months ago.

A few days ago, the device wouldn't boot. It would show the apple logo for a few seconds, then shutdown.

My first thought was to do a restore on the unit, but it won't complete the process. It will start preparing the iPod for restore, then it reboots the unit (I see the logo again) and then on the second reboot, it never comes back on and the restore fails with a variety of errors (1603, 1604, 1611).

I've done a tonne of research on different recovery techniques, but I get the same result. Here's what I've tried so far:

    • Standard Restore from Restore mode
    • Restore from DFU mode
    • Downgrading to an earlier firmware (3.0.7, 2.2.1, 1.1.4) usinig an older iTunes (7.6.2)
    • Using Ziphone to force it out of DFU mode
    • Letting it sit for 48 hours

I'm not sure what my next steps should be. I'm proficient enough to pop it open if necessary but I think I need to try some method other than iTunes.

    Suggestions?
