The controllers for the Wii U are less of a gimmick than the Wii but 3D in general is a gimmick that no one wants. They will be around for the forceable future.

Mobile phones are going to eventually kill off handheld gaming for good, if it hasnt happened all ready. I think the best thing Sony and Nintendo can do at this point is look at other platforms, or start developing/licensing IPs for iOS and Android.

Also I don't think Nintendo has a good idea of what the American market is really like. The Xbox dominates house holds here, maybe they should take a page out of Microsoft's book if they want to continue selling consoles and not fizzle out.

It also probably has something to do with the retina display. The nintendo and other handhelds hardware seemed outdated basically immediately.

I disagree that 3D is a fad. Ever since the beginning of screens, we've been aiming for the most lifelike screen. First from B&W to color, then higher resolutions, and now we can look at a leaf and a picture of a leaf on a lot of screens and hardly see a difference. The only thing most screens lack in today are depth, which is a part of the life we see in front of our eyes every day. Why do you think 3D movies are increasingly popular? 3D TVs? Because it's what people want. They want the most realistic experience they can buy. Eventually we'll have hologram-capable devices where they appear to have depth and actually have depth, but until then, 3D will be around.

My second point is that nearly every piece of "advanced" technology was, at the time of its initial iteration, called a "fad" or "gimmick."

Your argument deffinitly has some validity, though I agree with Jesse402, i think "3D" is a fad. After the release of Avatar there was a big push for 3D, but it just kinda died off. There were tons of companies at CES that year planning to sell out big time on 3D pcs and TVs, and none of it really got going. When we have real 3D (AKA holograms) and not just offset 2D images then i think it will be a big hit.

    I guess the 3DS technically is two offset 2D images...but it's glasses-free.

Does yours give you headaches? I have absolutely no problems whatsoever. Everyone I know who has one agrees as well. At first, it was..."weird," but headache-causing? Not for me.
