If you want to keep track then yeah.

You need the shoe with the chip though,

The new one uses GPS and is only a couple bucks so who cares. The previous versions with the iPods use a small oval shaped device about 1 1/4" x 3/4". It fits in a special compartment in the Nike+ running shoes but you can put it in your sock if you don't have the shoes. I think it's great and it uploads all you info to the Nike+ website which also has all kinds of contests and such.

Yes, but the shoe still needs the chip in it, other wise how can it track your running?

while the iPod may have it built in, it still needs a way to track. Steve even said that in the 2008 keynote.

No it doesn't have to be in the shoe. I suggest you use it before you comment about it.

I downloaded the new on on my iPhone 4 and it uses the GPS of the phone.

The GPS one is totally different, all itll do is track your location, it wont exactly be accurate especially if you use that WiFi Jumping feature for iPod touch that can track your location without being connected to a WiFi network [if its even supported by the App. ] we are talking about the Official Nike + App for iOS. its NOT in the App Store, its bundled in iOS.
