(Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.)

I've never opened an iTunes account. I want to upgrade my first generation iPod Touch (1.1.4) to firmware version 2.2.

Is there a way to do it without paying through iTunes?

    Thanks!

But I'd say, download 2.2 and do the shift-recovery trick and restore your iPod with the 2.2 firmware... And you should enter DFU mode before doing so. At least I think.

We can't post direct links here, so just google, "2.2 iPod touch firmware download".

You don't need to enter DFU mode.

First you have to find 2.0 which is on the internet because that's where I got mine from.

oh god! thats illegal! going on google or [PIRACY.tb].org and easily finding and downloading the 2.2 ispw firmware file, and then opening it in itunes to seemlessly apply the new firmware to your device is certainly not allowed! =]

no thats bullsh*t, you can go straight to 2.2 from 1.1.4, thats what I did.... unless..... I do remember that app "fwrchanger" that made your device appear to be running 2.0 to itunes... i think that might have been enabled so idk...

Go on Google and type "iPod1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw" without quotes, and look for it. That's all I can tell you. By the way you can combine what I said with others above and that will get you success

. Sorry if I just did something against the rules cuz I'm not like that. I didn't post a direct link so I don't think it's illegal...

It is illegal to download and/or use it. Most people do it anyway. So it's up to you.
