So I'm thinking of buying a Ipod Touch G2, and I have never owned an Ipod before. I've heard from some people that the sound-quality is inferior to many other players.

Also, as I've understood, the only difference in a jailbroken and a non-broken Touch is access to 3rd-party applications, right?

the EQ is horrible but without it and the volume at almost full sounds perfectly fine

The sound quality is merely average to my ears. There are better alternatives however, such as the Cowon S9

Wouldn't the audio quality have more to do with the bitrate of the songs than the iPod itself?

I'm also new to iPods, just bought my first one, and I can tell you that it seems iTunes music does not sound as good as my ripped cds, with a 320kbps bitrate. I believe iTunes encodes at a 128kbps bitrate

Well partly. The bitrate of the song, the quality from the player, and the headphones all matter in the perfect sound quality.

cd quality is 160 - 192, 320 is usually straight from the studio which is unlikely to have actual files that are truly 320 just re-encoded in 320

Well, the speaker sux, but if you got good earplugs from something like Koss or Skullcandy the quality should be good.

And with a jailbreak you can do a lot more stuff on it then with a non-broken, but there is no jailbreak for 2G so we just gotta w8 for that one.

And you can download 3rd-party apps from appstore.

Hmm, good quality+Skullcandy never mix well together...

The 2G defeinitely sounds better than the 1G IMO (I have owned and listened to both a lot.) Cleaner sound overall, also no more background hiss (or at least a lot less than before.)
