I have a late 2007 HP 14 inch laptop. About a year ago it crashed. A few months later I got a new macbook. Well I figured I might as well try to fix my old one because I can't really mess up something thats broken. I tried re-installing vista and it didn't work. Then I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10. I could only run it from the disk. It displayed a flashing message that said "hard drive has many bad sectors." So I guess that means I need a new hard drive right? Well I was looking at this one

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate...tops/9326428.p?id=1218085426687&skuId=9326428

My question is "Is my laptop too out of date to use it effectively or am I just wasting money?"

My laptop has a 1.8 ghz AMD processor and 1 gig of DDR ram (I plan to upgrade that to 2 gigs if this works)

I want to install Windows vista (If possible windows XP if I can find a good deal) alongside Ubuntu 9.10

What are your thoughts? Will my laptop get too hot? Do I really need the 7200 rpm drive speed?

Still no replies? Well I ordered a very similar hard drive off Best Buy's website. Same specs but Western Digital and 320 gigs for $84.99.

Status update: I got the hard drive in the mail and the box was beat to hell. Now I have to exchange it.
