    So...
i get an iPhone this weekend (original carrier) and i dont now what firmware it will be running.
    My questions are:

    1. Do i have to upgrade to activate it for the carrier

    2. Can i jailbreak it when i dont need an unlock? (its a 3GS)

Sorry for the noob questions but wasnt active in the scene since the 1g ipod touch ^^'

    1. you are not forced to upgrade to activate it as far as I know.

    2. as long as it doesn't come with 3.1.3 you can jailbreak it. and I seriously doubt it would come with it.

tethered only means that you need it plugged into the computer to boot it up. You'll find out when you turn it off I guess

I know that, but, if the iphone runs the 3.1.2 firmware, is it tethered than or can i jailbreak without the tethering?

I think the 3GS iPhone and the iPod 3G are still tethered but I'm not positive

Not all 3GS's are tethered but if you get a new one it will most likely be tethered. The new ones are all tethered (some refurbished units are still untethered).

It all depends on the iBoot version in the iPhone; you can usually tell off the serial number of the iPhone (xx940 or earlier is untethered). However, some of the old iBoots got shipped in newer phones so you can either check your iBoot version (DFU mode and check it via the USB connection) or just jailbreak it and see if it is tethered when you restart it.
