Right, at my house we have my computer and the family laptop. I have my external HD with all our family photos/music/videos etc. I tried in some way (and failed) to share a folder but it turned out it somehow screwed my networking settings.

So I found some old laptop which isn't in use which connects to our wireless router via Ethernet and generally is slow and unusable. I found something called FreeNAS and it seems like it's an OS designed for a home server? Could I install this on the old laptop and keep it connected with my external HD and share files throughout the family computers?

    Or any other suggestions?
