It might be a compatibility issue between 2.1 and 4.0.2.

Yeah, you should really keep ipod's up-to-date to prevent this kind of issue.

Hopefully the contacts are backed up to a SIM card or Google/Yahoo server or something.

If you did Shift Restore then obviously all your stuff will be gone.

But since it seems that you did normal update, its possible that it is a issue or a update that happened in between the firmwares 2.1 and 4.0.2.

This could also be if your Mom's iPod was jailbroken and had a theme or something else which changes some files turned on.

If it was jailbroken, its probably a Cydia app that did it.

Though, I think a simple Shift Restore to 4.0.2. will do the job but all her Apps, music, pictures and other stuff, will be gone.

If she just used it not so often, which I think so due to the fact she had 2.1 firmware, she wouldn't mind losing her stuff.Just sync the new apps to iTunes.

    Hopefully I helped.

Skipping a firmware in an update will usually require the iPod to be erased. My friend's iPod needed to be erased when he tried to restore from 3.0 to 4.0.

Her iphone wasn't jailbroken, and I did a normal update, and she minds about her loosing her data, since she used her ipod as an agenda, she had 400+ contacts, all the important dates on her calendar, and important notes, and she didn't update her ipod often, becouse she doesn't even know how to do it

Try to downgrade to 2.1. Google the firmware, download it then DFU restore to 2.1. Might work, then re-sync and see if that works.
