i mean that in the firmwares folder there is a folder, a few dmgs and some text thing. inside the folder is 2 more folders. one has 3 files: ibss, ibec and WTF.s518... the other folder just has .img3 files... no ipsw. although while i was searching through the forums i found several mentions of kernelcache. and n72a. along with the first text thing is the kernel cache thing. can these two things help me? and still no ipsw

First off are you using Windows or Mac?

When you downloaded the 2.2.1 file it should be named something like this: iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw

Note the file extension is ipsw.

On Windows with the iPod attached bring up iTunes. In the iPod device window press sh*t + left click the Restore button. Navigate to where the restore file is and click open.

Did you download it with Safari? It always does this to me when I use it.
