As a gift for getting accepted into the university of Florida, my parents are going to buy me a laptop. I need help with what to look for. Please no one say a mac because its over their price range and also im going for engineering and a PC is required anyway. Here's some of the specs i want for it, not in any specific order:

    -fast in general
    -good graphics and video cards
    -preferably larger screen
-able to play movies well, and also stream videos without lag
-good video camera to be able to support video chats clearly
    -good processor
-able to support windows 7/aero theme
    -decent gaming capabilities
    -alot of RAM
    -good storage space/hard drive
-any other features you might recommend.

Please post your recommendations and also any experiences, if any, you had with certain brands like dell, hp, sony...etc

I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 and I love it and i would recommend it if it is within your budget. Even so, I would look at other brands too if I were you. Do some research on google, consumer reports, etc... (I heard toshibas are built really well) As far as the specs go, i would recommend 3-4 gb of ram and the best graphics card and processor that you can afford. For reference, I have 4gb of ram with Intel(R) Core2 Duo P8700 @ 2.53ghz, and ati mobility radeon hd 3670 graphics card. I can run solidworks without a hiccup. (Yep i'm in engineering too) I'm sure you could get by with less than this though.
What kind of engineering are you going in to?
Its not easy so good luck!

Ok thanks. I'm most likely going to go for a mechanical/aeropace degree.

Anyone else have suggestions on what to get for a laptop?

I'm a BIG fan of Acer. They typically have everything you'd want too: portability, good amount of RAM & HD space, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. Check tigerdirect.com ...that's where I bought my last Acer and it's still going strong. It probably comes with the upgrade to Windows 7 as well. Happy shopping!

gateways arent the best, but the reason i recommend them to OP is that i have never had a problem of any kind with gateway products. i personally think gateways are the best budget computers (best non budget would be a homemade computer lol)
