I have a great converter for DIVX files - its called 3Gp converter.
but i'm looking for the best DVD - MP4 converter. Straight shot conversion. I dont want to copy files to hard drive first, then convert. I want to do it right from the disc.

    is handbrake good?

    Any other suggestions?

Hi, I'm not sure if your using a mac or PC but, I've been using DVD fab on my MB pro running Vista and it gets the job done for me.

    Cheers,

I hate to agree BUT DVD Fab is a gem of a program. PC only though.

Handbrake on the Mac is the way to go.
Just make sure your conversion settings are set correctly. ie: for iPod Classic/Video I converted using 320x240. For the Touch I suppose you would convert at 320x480?
    Anyone confirm? Nintendodude?

Yes I tried handbrake and I didnt like it. Took too long. DVD FAB took about 40 minutes, and I can keep the size down to whatever I want, and I can keep the picture size as well. Thanks for the help.

Now I just need a good DVX to MPEG4 converter where I can control the file size.

3gp converter is good, but I cannot control the end file size.

If you read the specs for the touch, you can do video up to 640x480... however, since the screen on the touch is only 480x320, it doesnt make much sense to make it much larger. In essence, I try to match the larger of the two, depending on the aspect ratio of the source material. Also depends if you plan to watch your movie zoomed in or out.

I cant give you any advice on what to use here... because I do a much more complicated and longer procedure where I have to rip the dvd to the harddrive first. Get great quality results and can fit a 2 hour movie onto about 700 or 800 megabytes with pretty good quality. Not going to post it here since it wasnt what was asked for, but if anyone is interested, let me know. And these programs should work for file conversions as well... given some work first.

Well, i for one try to convert using the biggest possible size the touch will support (640x480 4:3, etc) that way i don't have to have multiple copies of the same media file. I am trying to convert all my old media to mp4 and it's not going so well. I'll check out handbrake and dvd fab when i get home.
