Last week my 2nd gen(i think) not jailbroken ipod touch was sitting on my desk when the screen lit up. i unlocked it and realised the volume was going up and down on its own (as if someone was doing it). i wasnt touching the side buttons or sliding it across the screen. when i googled problems, i was told to restore my ipod.
i restored it (which took 2 to 3 hours). when it was eventually finished i turned it back on and left it for a day.
now, the volume is fixed, but when i am using my ipod it starts to lock. it doesnt matter what i am doing etc, the screen locks. even when i unlock it, i have about a second before it relocks. this goes on for ages...the longest i have spent was 20 minutes, unlocking, typing a letter, screen locking itself, me unlocking it etc etc because i needed to type the email.
i took the ipod to the Apple store but was told its a software issue and to reinstall the ipod as a new device. but even after trying this it still doesnt work!!!!

please help as it is really irritating not having the use of my ipod.
even just comment if this has happened to yours so i know mine isnt just broken!
    thanks!

Obviously auto-lock isn't the issue. Did you even read the guys post?
If you tried restoring without restoring a backup, it's a hardware issue.
I assume the screen goes black among with the locking. And the fact that it lit up on its own confirms my theory.

Your power button is broken. It goes on and off on its own, making your ipod lit up and lock itself on its own.
