I had something to do with pirating beta firmware.
I have to remind everyone that you cannot pirate iOS 5 for iPad 2, for lack of a jailbreak to install pirated beta software. The only unreleased OS that you can pirate successfully for the iPad 2 is iOS 5 GM, which is indistinguishable (most likely) from the final build, and thereby should not cause purple screens. Your purple screening problem is most likely a hardware problem, unless there's something I've overlooked.
I believe that there was a way where you can screw up the install and have a purple screen but I think you can restore and fix it. That's why I said to restore. Not 100% sure though. It's all a fuzzy memory.
EDIT: Just re-read it and I missed the part he said he shook it and it turned on. Now I feel stupid
Never heard of it in this case then. Although this is almost sure to be hardware if shaking truly fixed the problem once before.
