I went to setting>about and it says capacity is only 7.0 GB.... why's it leaving out a Gig? Is this supposed to happen?

My 16GB says it is only 14.6GB. The space that doesn't show up is used for the formatting and Firmware. Stuff like that. Exactly how it should be.

That isn't true. The OS is the orange "Other" section you see in iTunes, which is around 148MB. A full iPhone/iPod Touch firmware would not exceed ~200MB, considering the firmware download is only ~130MB. The one GB that goes away is when after you "format" the iPod, leaving only 7GB. Few discrepancies between the bits and the bytes, it a little hard to explain.

Yeah, the OS is not what changes the 'actual capacity'...
Retailers have always used the general formula that 1000 bytes = 1 MB etc, yet in reality there are 1024 bytes in a MB et al. So, according to their decimal / 1000bytes-to-a-megabyte formula the iPod is 8GB/16GB/32GB, but in reality you are getting a little under.

Its been this way as long as I can remember... why they do this I don't exactly know, maybe it makes you feel like you are getting a better deal? Plus, "New iPod touch Second Generation 14.6GB doesn't have the same ring to it :-D
