I currently have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with these specs:
1.83 GHz Core Duo T2400 with 2 mb cache
    1.5 GB ddr2 ram
intel 945gm integrate graphics with 256 max memory.

This configuration is crap for modern games, basically the integrated graphics fault.

But I have seen a deal for a Sony VAIO with these specs:
2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 mb cache
    4GB RAM
ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4650 with 512 mb dedicated memory and 1.6 gb intel integrated for 2 gb of graphic memory

It costs 649, and is it a good configuration for games? Is it worth the upgrade? Internet benchmarks show that the 4650 mobility gpu I fairly good for games.

That would be a good upgrade, but unless you need the portability of a laptop for for a desktop - more power for your dollar.
in laptop terms, however, that is a good laptop and should run great.

You could build a decently beefy gaming PC with $650 that would run circles around the Vaio.

Yes. He's going to buy a computer, check it on canyourunit, then if not, return it.

Anyways, as rafarquhar said, building = cheaper and more powerful.
    Just for example...
    Case 50
    PSU 40
    Mobo 100
    CPU 200
    GFX 70
    Ram 90

    =$520
This is just rough stuff... For this you would get
    Decent case
    Decent Power Supply
    Good Mobo
Great CPU, prob an i7 for that price!
Very good GFX (You could spend up to like, $150 if you want to run really really really high graphics) My dad got a great card for $40, gaming you'll wanna spend more hence 70
Probably, on a new PC, at least 6/8 gb ram
And the only thing left would be a cd/dvd drive, which you can pull out of your pc
Also, depending on how old your current pc is / what your new is compatible with, you could pull out old ram and put in new
If you want to do really high graphics gaming, look into getting a strong, $150 game card as mentioned.
This would run you up to $600
But, you could freakin run CoD6, Crysis, and L4D2 all at the same time if you wanted to (not sure, but probably lol)
That would be my dream pc <3
