I have a 1st gen 16 GB Ipod Touch with 2.2 firmware. I cannot get the Music Player to run. When I click on the Music icon the screen goes all white for a good 15 seconds and goes back to the home screen. I really don’t want to restore it.

Are you jailbroken? If not, all you can do is restore.

    It is jailbroken.
I have rebooted many times, and deleted a couple of apps.

I just noticed that the same thing happens with the Videos icon. I don't have any videos, so that doesn't bother me.... Strange nontheless...

make sure everything is okay via ssh
other than that...the only solution i can think of is restore

Habe you ever had MobileMusicPlayer Flip installed? It's probably related to that. Reinstall & Uninstall it.

If that doesn't work, you could try extracting the Music.app & Video.app from your 3.0 .IPSW. And replacing your currnt ones.
Other than that, you'll need to restore.

Haven't ssh or ftp in a long time.
Never even herd of MobileMusicPlayer Flip.
Can I open the .IPSW with WinRAR like an .IPA?

What worries me the most about restoring is loosing all my settings and database files from my apps. Are all saved inside the Applications folder or are some settings saved in another folder? Given that if I upgrade to 3.0 they hopefully be compatible.

I probably shouldn't have suggested it, It's extremely difficult to extract files from an .IPSW. You need to decrypt the .DMGs inside. Google might help.

Please don't discuss .ipa's, they aren't allowed in the forums. I believe you need a Mac to decrypt the .dmg's as it involves terminal.

The only reason I think it would not work is possibly the RAM being too low... I think you may have to much apps running in the background (I believe they are called daemons? Bear with me, the only knowledge of jailbroken iPods that I have is from what I read). Lots of app don't work for me if my RAM is completely taken up... Having lots of daemons is probably a problem. I believe there is a thread to check this in the Jailbroken iPod forum...
