    overflow in memory
if you have an older ipod it'll tend to crash less
the third generation has double the memory making it more stable in memory drowning enviroments....

Thats called Safe Mode when ur Springboard Crashes.

What generation is ur device? Multitasking only works well on an iPhone 3GS/iPod touch 3rd gen 32/64GB. Multitasking on any other ipod will kill it.

Yeah they have more ram and better processor and stuff.
    Too bad...
But what were you looking to multitask. Backgrounding 1 or maybe 2 apps works, but nothing more on a 2nd gen.

I've got a first gen, and backgrounded about 5 applications no problem.

What would be the point of backgrounding heavy apps?

Yeah, Meka's right. I've done the same thing on my brother's 2nd gen.

The apps aren't heavy, memory intensive 3D games, but it works alright. Tweetie, Beejive IM, Safari, Weather; it worked alright.

I use Kirikae, That seems to be the best for my iPod touch 2g... I also go to processers and clean memory to give more mem...
