You have to jailbreak, then install 'backgrounder' from Cydia

If you want to be able to go on AIM and browse Safari, dont use Backgrounder (wastes battery).

Just upgrade to 3.0, and install IM+ or BeejiveIM.

It will let you sign in to AIM, and then when you press the home button, youre still signed in. Whenever you get an IM, it will pop up on your screen when youre playing a game, using an app, or browsing Safari.

And it will give you the choice to reply to it, or close it.

    * You must be on 3.0 firmware to allow your device to recieve push notifications.
