Palm pre and Andriod phones already have multitasking so like most things iPhone the jailbreak community is there to make Apple's iPhone able t compete with those smartphones.

For those of you dont know, multitasking is the abilty to run multiple apps at the same time.

There is a package in Cydia called ProSwitcher that allows you to do such a thing, just go into Cydia (make sure your sources are refreshed) and search for "ProSwitcher", download it and reboot your iPhone, and viola multitasking!

    Pros
    -Fast
    -Not a big memory hog
    -Swipe to end

    Cons
    -Big battery drain

Same with an app called Kirikae that is a very fast "app switcher" it was the first on the scene so go support that also.

    Pros
    -Simple
    -Lots of customization

    Cons
    -Slow

Apples iOS 4 has this functionality but developers must input a specific API in there apps to have "true multitasking" so packages like ProSwitcher and Kirikae are a nice alternative to have.

    Thanks all,
    Anthony

Well, multitasking on iOS 4 will only be on iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod Touch 3G (without the need of any tinkering at least). So other device users may find this useful. Though, this is pretty much known.

For N00b's. It would be easier to update for iOS's 4.0 multitasking. jailbreaking has quirks. 4.0 runs fine.

Anyway. 4.0's I think is better. As you can have apps running and not use RAM. And the game pauses. So you could switch quickly from DoodleJump to check your Email then go back and be in the same spot and not have to reload the app. As it stays in the multitasking dock.

For ProSwitcher. The game stays running so it uses up memory.

ProSwitcher uses more resources than Circuitous. I do prefer Circuitous now. You can get it the same way (Cydia). However, nothing will be more resource friendly than Apple's implementation for the iPhone. For noobs, wait for 4.0 to be released, then you'll have it built in. If you have an older model, I'm sure there will be a Cydia package that will enable it for you (otherwise you have to go into the system manually, this can be dangerous).

But the 1&2G iPods don't get multitasking in iOs 4.0 and neither does the iPhone 3G
