The size of the file is usually an indicator of the quality of the conversion. The smaller the file the lower the quality, usually speaking. There are lots of free tools that will convert video to iPod format such as Videora and Handbrake. Do a google search for more info.

If your on a mac (not sure about windows), Visual Hub Rocks!.. Solid and can convert to about any format.. 24 bucks or you can download their freeware which will convert to ipod file size....I also love handbrake for those dvd's and iso's.....

get one application that converts mp4 into H.264.

Basically, it is in mp4 but more compressed, yet with better quality

OK, how can you get better quality than what you started with? If you're compressing MP4 you're not going to get better quality than the source. It may be better compression which means smaller file sizes but you won't improve the quality of the content.

What's a good size for videos on the ipod touch? I'm used to converting DVDs to 700-800MB xvids for my tv. I would figure on a 3.5inch screen that 300MB would suffice?

I created an ipod touch video using that Handbrake program and it made an 800MB file, is 800MB really necessary? I played that file on my television and the quality is great and that is on a 30" standard def TV...
