Approximately how many movies can my 16GB iPod hold? Also, anyone know of any good software that allows you to strip off the extra features in a DVD?

I think you're probably looking at anywhere between 500mb to 1.2GB per full length movie depending on how its encoded. So if you dont have any music on there, you could probably fit somewhere around 10-15 movies

dvdshrink will allow you to strip certain parts out of a dvd

I guess that would depend on how you encode them...

I would guess you are looking at anywhere from 1-2gb/movie (just for the title track) encoded in fair (1gb) to good (2gb) quality.

I ran 1 of 5 1GB vobs from "firehouse dog" (just happen to have that one handy) through http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/ with pretty average settings, and it came out around 300mb. Looked very nice on the touch.

You'd want to rip the dvd to a single vob (or just rip it, then use vobjoin to join the vobs, or just encode each vob as its own "video") - dunno if you are mac or PC or linux based, but there are tools for all those platforms to rip/encode/fold/spindle/mutilate

Edit: Short answer - even on the 8GB touch, "more video then battery"

Yeah you can have movies be 300-400mb but the quality wont be to good.
For example the movie superbad (not the unrated version) is about 2 hours. I have it at 1.6gb and that is pretty good quality. I like my movies to be high quality, especially sense I use the tv out cable a lot.

Yep, people have varying degrees of acceptance of quality.

Simple math - Average DVD movie comes in around 5-6GB, and is 720x480

Touch frame is less then half that, so if you did not drop quality at all, you'd just cut the size in half, or 2.5-3GB for the movie. Of course, you will drop quality, and reduce the audio, and lose the subtitles and alternate audio tracks, etc... which will shave off another 1/4 gig, but if you are grinding that down to 300-400MB, you've really removed a lot of visual data.

But hey, whatever works for people

And "VOB" is the way the mpeg data is stored on the dvd disk itself. Usually the movie is chunked into several 1GB files ending in .VOB You need to transcode that to the mp4 encoding the touch/iphone wants.
