Working on a new project on the server my friend and I play on. He uses the toomanyitems mod, I go vanilla. Anyway,

Through that hole in the ceiling to second floor (his room, notice all the obsidian because he uses toomanyitems. :p)

Might post a video tour when it's completely finished, might keep showing some major updates as this rolls on.

Here's my average description of minecraft to the non minecrafter.

You start on a randomly generated island (random generated every world you make, makes the game so exciting). First thing first you have to punch trees to get wood. You use the wood to make tools. You use the tools to harvest more material. You then use the material to make a house. Better go frantically search for some coal, because if you dont have a torch at night, your effed! As night falls, make sure you have a house, or if not dig a hole into the side of a mountain. Put down torches in your hole or mountain... and then seal up the house/mountain. Why the torches?
Well... At night scary things come out... Zombies, skeletons armed with bow/arrows, spiders... And the worst of all... Creepers. Green things that make no noise until they are 1 foot away and go "SSSSSSSSsssssssssss" like a fuse, then blowing up and killing you and destroying blocks. including your house! If the land isn't lit up they will spawn INSIDE YOUR CAVE!
After the night is over, all monsters except creepers and spiders will burn and die from the sunlight. All the monsters above ground, that is...
So with your day go kill some cows, pigs... Cows give you leather to make armor, pigs give you porkchops to make food. Gather for a few days, try to get enough leather to make armor for your whole body. And get about 6 or 8 porkchops, cook em in a stove.
Get ready for the pant-crapping experience that makes minecraft amazing.
Look for a cave... Take a deep breath and enter. Monsters in caves never die from sunlight.
Explore the cave all over! look for rare minerals! Steel! Gold! DIAMOND! Getting diamond is so great... first time I was overly happy. You can make the strongest tools! Then once you get nice tools, go and make your house awesome... Make it a castle... Make a hotel... Make a super underground hidden fortress... Make a tower that reaches the sky. But always remember... Your tools break.. And the monsters come out at night...
This game can have some truely heart breaking experiences... You have to take a leap of faith and drop money on this game. You won't regret it. Promise.
PS you might want to look up a guide for your first few days on youtube. It's hard the first couple days. but worth every minute.

I used the map renderer MC Map Live which is only currently available for Mac OS X but if you search 'mine craft map renderers' on google you will fin lots for Windows & Linux also.

MC Map Live actually allows you to connect to a remote server and it plots live changes on the map itself. So you could have it open in a new window and know what people are doing on your server without ever having to log in.

    Yes, well a map renderer.
