At least from the front, the Microsoft Courier looks very similar to the iPad.

There hasn't been any pictures of the Courier, only renders I believe. Also the Courier was talked about and rendered before the iPad was, so I believe it is the other way around.

not really. apple has probably been developing the ipad for quite some time.
its just a coincidence. and really how many designs are there for a tablet..

According to who though? People have been speculating the iPad for a very long time, that doesn't mean that they've been developing it for so long.

A render and a finished product are very different. A finished, shipping product means years of work, manufacturing ramp-up, software development, etc.. All that the Courier is right now is vaporware. There is no way that since Gizmodo revealed the Courier in September 2009, Apple could've completed the R&D cycle for even a part in the iPad, let alone the entire outer casing. Not to say that Microsoft copied though, because frankly this design is sort of obvious for the form factor that is in play here.

Haha, it seems to me like there is only really one design for a tablet... you make a giant screen and it's done. Having two screens makes it seem quite different.
