    -EDIT-

i found out that this is a bug with all "stay awake" software. i.e. keep awake, insomnia, etc..

so if anyone else is having this problem, disable the stay awake app, reboot the ipod and ur mic/controls will work again.

the earbuds work, as in, i can listen to music from them, but the volume controls and microphone dont work. unless i reboot the device.

    weird eh?

i dont think ya get what i mean lol.

first, they're the apple earbuds that came with my ipod, i actually have two pairs and they both do this.

    what happens is this.

if my ipod sits un-used for any length of time, more then 3-4 hours, my microphone and controls stop working, UNLESS i reboot the ipod. then they work again.

OH alright. well it still could be something screwy with your earphones, i mean they are Apple's.
    OR

So if i were you i would restore, but first use AptBackup. Download it off cydia and heres a video on how to use it: ( not me in the video )

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM-NQidULzs

in case you couldnt understand him/her, first download AptBackup. Then open it and click "Backup" button on the bottom.( takes like 4 seconds to backup) Then connect your ipod to itunes. when the ipod icon and appears on the left column, right click and click " Back Up "
    then you should be good.

Sorry i havent yet figured out how to retrieve the AptBackup, yet. PM some of the major users on this forum and maybe they'll know.

    I have the same issue.

It is indeed a Spirit issue - I think?
    I've tried multiple restores, etc.

I had my headphones replaced, first for faulty remotes (before spirit was released), and again thinking it was the earbud issue.

Next time it happens, play the music, and there should be music playing from speakers AND headphones.
    At least for me.
