I run linux and have a jailbroken ipod. I have installed Mediatomb and can access my mp3's over my network as well as any MP4s that are pre-coded.

    http://mediatomb.cc

My goal though is to watch whatever format of a movie from the computer and have it transcode and stream to the touch on the wireless network. Mediatomb says it can transcode files on the fly, but i'm having the hardest time doing it. I'm sure it can be done, maybe not with Mediatomb even, but something.

Any help or directions would be appreciated. Thanks

I think the problem is that the iPod is not a UPnP compatible device.

Thanks for the constructive answer. He just said he's already have some MP4 playing over upnp (yes, there are applications to do that, such as plugplayer.
What he wants is someone to help him to configure his upnp server (mediatomb) in order to transcode non playable videos to m4v on the fly, so they can be played on the iPod.

Sorry for the bounce, I'm having the same exact problem.
I'll try to find a way to do that. I'll keep you informed if I find something.
