My 2g 8g ipod is a brick to use the old fashioned term. It powers up, but just cycles throught the apple avatar, spinning wheel, won't boot. It was 4.1, jailbroken, not backed up on itunes, I've lost my itunes password, ID etc and don't want to have to go via itunes to install ios 4.2.1. My pc is Running WinXP.

I can get an image of ios system 4.2.1 system on my pc. So, is it possible to restore the newer system WITHOUT having to log into itunes?

    Thanks

    Thanks.

Ok, whilst its going through its current on/boot/off cycling, I:

1 connect the ipod to a PC which is running latest version of itunes (although not signed into itunes),
    2 enter DFU mode and
3 this will somehow tell the itunes to install the "best" (read latest) version of IOS via the DFU mode?

I've found instructions re how to enter DFU mode. Anyway, in the mindset of living dangerously (there's no valuable data on the ipod), I've tried the above to point 2 and the itunes displayed:

"Itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes"

I clicked on the OK button.

Itunes then displays on its main screen:

    "NAME : IPOD
    Capacity: n/a
    SW version: n/a
    Serial Number: n/a

Below that the update button is greyed out, but the restore button is not. I clicked on the restore button and it churned through the restore process. The first phase took about 5 minutes. It then went to second and stated "... restoring software on this ipod". After about 3-4 minutes, a message window popped up:

"The ipod could not be restored. An unkown error occured. [1611]"

I clicked on "more Information" and connected me to:

I clicked on error # 1611 and got:

"Error 1611: This error may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Also attempt to restore while connected with a known-good 30-pin Dock Connector cable, computer, and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value (00 499901 064000 0) can also confirm a hardware issue. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured proxy or security software, such as FoxyProxy, can cause error 1611. To troubleshoot third-party security software, follow these steps."

It now presents me with a bunch of things to check out as reasons for error 1611. I have latest itunes version (ok it was installed 24 hours ago!) , XP all up to date as of yesterday, my router firmware was upgraded to most recent about 6 months ago (its about 5 years old), I have Comodo firewall so will disable this and try DFU again. I have very rarely dropped the ipod and its always been kept in a case. Apologies for the noobish verbosity but thought other noobs may one day appreciate what I did and found!

I'm going to try changing the USB port and run it all again after rebooting.

Tried rebooting, disabling the firewall and 2 other USB ports. No change. DFU mode alerts itunes and it only wants to restore, passes verification with apple, but comes up with error 1611. This leaves ipod display showing its in restore (not DFU) mode and this is the only apparent change on the ipod!

    Any ideas?

Try Recovery Mode, hold the home button while plugging it into the USB thingy with iTunes open, if it worked, you should see on your screen an apple USB cord "pointing" to the iTunes symbol.

    P.S Your iPod isn't bricked

I have tried this a few times as well. It just takes me to the same sub menu in itunes that I am receiving when in DFU mode. Whether I try recovery or DFU mode both take me to the same part of itunes. That is, that the Check for Update button is greyed out as it has always been under all my attempts in the past 36 hours or so. The Restore button is not so this is the only option left for me to try. Each time I try this, I get the following status messages appearing at the top of the itunes window in this order:

    Extracting software...
    Verifying Ipod restore with apple...
    Preparing ipod for restore...

Then a longer delay of some 2-3 minutes followed by the error message pertaining to error code 1611 as mentioned above. I've tried this after exiting with my firewall on the pc. I'm assuming that if itunes can verify the restore with apple's servers then my firewall is not restricting the restore in any way?

I tried again this morning after another fresh pc reboot but the only glimmer of hope is that the problem and error code is consistent pointing I hope to only one area that is holding this process up. I'd like to have some idea as to where to go from here.

I should add that the pc I'm using now is not the same pc that I used to configure )and possibly back up) the ipod when I first activated it about 18 months ago. I don't know if this has any bearing on the restore process when it attempts to find my previous settings, apps and data. Are they backed up remotely or on the local pc??

Just an update. Tried putting the ipod into DFU mode. Uninstalling itunes, Reboot pc, install latest itunes. Start itunes whilst ipod connected, itunes states words to the effect of:

**** "Ipod found in recovery mode. This ipod must be restored"

I continue. Itunes verifies and states " Preparing Ipod for restore..." and 4 minutes passes with no apparent action.

Ipod displays the apple and horizontal install bar (MT)

it fails and comes up with error code 1604.

I go through this process as per 1604 instructions:

"Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
    1. Restore and wait for error 1604.
    2. When prompted, click OK.
    3. Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
    4. iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    5. Try to restore again."
At #4 Ipod was not automatically recognised by itunes.

I then went through the switch to DFU mode procedure and this got the ipod to be recognised by itunes. AT this point go to **** above to continue as per above.

Someone stated earlier that my ipod is not bricked. its behaving like a brick with an LCD display on it!
