I had a similar problem. I uninstalled iTunes, when you reinstall then reconnect your ipod in the "factory reboot" mode. iTunes should recognize it then and ask for you to select file to load.

From my understanding, though, the ipod is still working, correct?

Hold down the sleep and home buttons for about 25 seconds, or until the "Connect iPod to iTunes" picture comes up. When that happens, connect it to your computer and the rest should be cake.
